Okay guys;

I have alot of free time at work...I mean ALOT of free time.

Essentially, the only time I have to move away from the computer to do any work, happens once about every hour and a half.

So I want to start playing FFXI at work.

Heres the thing though -

I can't install new programs on the work computers, and the computers do not have a disk drive. (All the people who work there carry personal flash drives rather than disks for information)

I have a 160GB External HD, and I'm copying over my entire POL folder from program files...

Would that be enough to play FFXI at work, or do I have to completely re-install the game onto the portable hard drive?

Whisp, for reference, the other shift people and shift after me all play online games.

They are just playing browser/flash games all night.

I just want to have something like FFXI to help kill time... my shift is from 4pm - 1am...after 5pm, everyone else there has gone home, and I'm the ONLY person there til midnight.

FFXI will help me keep my sanity from being in a large warehouse completely alone for hours at a time.

Also, to the original topic:

I just tested my HD after copying all my POL files over and trying to run them from a different PC...

Dosn't work, get an error message...something about unable to find registration or something.

Also can't install to the HD...whenever I put the FFXI discs in the PC, the only options I have are to uninstall FFXI from my main hard drive.

Thoughts?

I think the only way, it would work. Is that if you installed final fantasy while the hd was connected to the pc you'll be playing on.

If it were wow, you can do it very easily.

Yeah, that's what i'm thinking too Mikey:

So... the only real obstacle there is getting around the "No CD Drive" on the computers part.

I'm thinking I can make an .iso copy of my FFXI disks, throw Daemons Tools onto my external HD...

And just install FFXI to the external HD using the ISOs mounted on a virtual drive with Daemons tools...

MAN that's alot of work, haha.

Not to mention, alot of install time, I'd probably have to do it throughout the course of a work week, installing the main game, then each expansion on different days.

Yeah its not really possible. When you install the game there are DLL files that are being registerd with the system. What you need to do is have all the correct registry entries on the work computer in order for FFXI to run.

laptop really is youre best bet, but not getting fired is also a great thing to do too lol.

Like I said, getting fired isn't gonna happen, it's allowed at my work for people to do whatever on the internet, keeping in mind only 2 main rules:

1: No installing of 3rd party software onto a computer.
2: No viewing of non-worksafe material.

As long as those are both held in consideration, then you are pretty much free to do whatever, my boss even told me before getting this position that if there was any games online, or things like that, that I like to do, to keep them in mind because of the insane amount of free time that goes along with this position.

Well, I'll try and get some other games onto the hard drive to play at work instead...maybe even (Dare I say it?) WoW.

By having "No Hard Drive" I take it you mean that it's on deep freeze or something, so, you could do this:

Bring an external HDD or an ipod and attach it to said computer, install FFXI, then after the install and update you can create a backup of the registry then save it on the external drive.

You could play FFXI like that, but when you restart the computer it would clear the changes you made to the registry... so, take the copy of the registry you made then back it up again after restart and you should be able to play.

Basically why copying POL files won't work is because FFXI needs to install in to the windows registry to fucntion as well.

Although I'd really recommend not playing ffxi at work, haha Grab a book or something if it's that bad I guess.

I didn't say No Hard Drive, I said no CD drive. There's no disk tray at all or anything like that on the computers here.

So there's no installing FFXI on the work computers at all, unless I do a virtual drive and iso copy of the game (Or external CD drive like mikey said)

Play WoW, Vivi. That's where I've been again lately. I'm not quitting FFXI, but I've found that I'll probably just switch between the two forever.

Laptop sounds like the best bet, or if possible, get on a PC with a CD drive that doesn't have FFXI installed, and see if that allows you, since you having it on the main drive already on your exisiting computer only gives you the uninstall option. Does that make sense?

I like how this one was less brutal than when Tracezero asked about it.

Vivit, get a DS and find a wireless hotspot with some online games.

Got a DS...no wireless hotspots in the warehouse, the thick walls don't let me pick up any signal from outside, and there isn't any WiFi inside.

Plus I already beat all my games like 100% for it (With the exception of Metroid Prime Hunters, but 100% scans can kiss my black ass)

FFXI would work with the files on the external HD if you could somehow get atleast the first few CD's in the computer to install all the registry stuff, until then, it will not work.

I am an inventory control manager for The Jewelry Channel:

Heres my job:

4:00pm - I show up, and sit down at my desk... I spend about 10 minutes looking over my list of jewelry for the next 12 hours.

4:10pm - 7:00pm - Nothing happens, other people go back and fourth to and from the vault, bringing me the jewelry in trays that correspond with each hour of the show, but I, myself, do nothing. (2hr.50min)

7:00pm - Everyone else working in the warehouse has gone home by this point, and I spend about 20 minutes making sure all the jewelry they have brought me over the last few hours matches the sheets of paper on my list.

7:20pm - 12:00am - I sit around an empty warehouse with nothing to do.
About every hour and a half, someone will come back, get a new tray, and leave me ones that have already been use on the show...I lock up the new trays in a lockbox, and unlock the trays for the new jewelry they are taking. At 12:00am the next person with my job for the "morning" shift comes in.

12:00am - 1:00am - I continue sitting around doing nothing, talking to the other guy who came in about how much I wish I had something to do all day, haha.

$11.50 an hour + Benefits.
