blm aren't popular? when i played, blm was way easier than whm or bard at getting a job. probably the easiest job in the game to get a party. when NA started reaching level 75, majority of them were black mages. also black mage were the biggest damage dealers in the whole game. is it not like that now?
BLMs are still the best damage to tp given ratio job in the game, however, it's just easier to zerg most things in game now, especially if you have the support. If you can kill mobs in less then 60 seconds by 'melee burning' it, who cares about what tp the mob spews when it's dead before it even knows it, wouldn't you agree?
BLMs started to drop in popularity when people finally started to realized chaining VTs was much more efficient. Then ToA came out and they got tossed to the curb like diseased lepers. An average merit party's paces about 15k/hr (when camps aren't over populated) and really good ones top over 20k/hr. Even in sub par parties, people still pace around 7k-8k per hour, which practically would of been unheard of back in our days hitting 75. Today, mobs die within 30 seconds, even less in those rare everybody is 'pimp' parties, and this was before the 2handed update. Mobs die even faster now. To put it in perspective for you, it's like KRT (where you would plateau around 10k/hr or so in most cases due to lack of mobs and mob respawn), but on three times more crack.
People see BLMs as a hindrance due to their heavy reliance on MP for damage, so at best now a days, they get invited to heal if there are no RDMs around. Skill chains and magic bursting in XP parties are a lost art, haha. Mage invite preference goes BRD|RDM > WHM > SMN|BLM. Most BLMs now solo/duo or go with BLM only parties.

I remember that, haha, still though even if they follow through with that, I don't see present day party mechanics chaning much. SE can try their best to make BLMs (or any red-headed step child job of the moment) appealing but in the end it's up to the community. Any programmer knows that they do not have any control over the end user, no matter what they do. People will always strive towards the path of less resistance. Similarly to BLMs, skill chains have been removed from present day party mechanics. As I already mentioned, skill chains are practically extinct. Unless the XP spots in WotG require SC to quickly and efficiently kill mobs or give some wacky bonus like 15% xp bonus for SCing/MBing, you won't be seeing people SC (or inviting BLMs to magic burst). Even then, if it's a requirement or padded some wacky desirable bonus, people will still jam pack themselves back into ToA as it's ridiculously to XP there. SE spoiled the game populace rotten with ridiculously easy XP spots and almost instant access to those spots, it'll be hard to top that unless they re-adjust ToA mobs but I've been going off on a huge tangent so I'll stop (can't help it, all those points all linked to one another, you can't discuss one point without including the other, they're not mutually exclusive :x).
Anyway, SE's warning their 'official window mode' may crash and such if used with other programs and the game having a reduction in performance while in that mode make me laugh. Guess I'll have to stick to full screen still for recording purposes.

Plds are the tanks of choice for end game for most HNMs, if not all. They have been for quite some time now (long before the super H@X, steroid infusing pld update, which just made them even more formidable tanks), especially among the top end game linkshells. It just took a while for the rest of the community to come around and accept it (like always).
