This was mentioned on LS earlier, surprised nobody posted it earlier since it was announced beginning of the week.

As of March 16th, Ifrit shall be no more.

Quote:
To allow players to enjoy all the content the game has to offer, we will be performing a World Merge.

Please refer to the "Guidance on the World Merge" below for more details.

[Guidance on the World Merge]

- Schedule
World Merge will be performed during the upcoming maintenance scheduled for Mar. 16, 2011. Once the maintenance is complete, characters from the "Source Worlds" will be migrated automatically to the "Destination Worlds."

* The schedule for the maintenace will be released at a later date.

- Details on the World Merge
The following is a list of Worlds designated for the World Merge.

Source World -> Destination World

Ramuh -> Bahamut
Alexander -> Shiva
Titan -> Phoenix
Gilgamesh -> Carbuncle
Unicorn -> Fenrir
Ifrit -> Odin
Diabolos -> Siren
Caitsith -> Ragnarok

* Other Worlds will not be affected.

- Things to note for the World Merge

Character Data:
Other than the data listed below, all character data will be transferred to the new World. This includes character status, items held by the player character, items stored in Mog safes, banks, and the like, items held by NPCs, gil, and key items.

Character Name:
In cases where a character with the same name already exists on the "Destination World," you may be required to change the name of your character. If this is necessary, your character name on the character selection screen before login will be displayed in yellow. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the change.

Changing the character name will not affect data such as your Friends List.

Items stored in the Delivery Box or Auction House:
Items and gil stored in the Delivery Box or Auction House will be deleted automatically when the World Merge takes place. Please move them to your character's belongings or Mog Safe before the World Merge.

Please note that items and gil lost in the merge cannot be restored through the Item Restoration service.

Added Mar. 2, 2011 at 22:10 (PST):
* Items and gil will only be deleted on the "Source World." There will be no impact on the "Destination World."

Linkshell, Pearlsack and Linkpearl:
Pearlsacks and Linkpearls cannot be carried over to the "Destination World," and will disappear during the World Merge. Linkshell owners will receive an unopened Linkshell when they log into the "Destination World" for the first time. Unopened Linkshells will not be affected by the merge.

Please note that you will need to create a new Linkshell Community after creating a new linkshell on the "Destination World."

- Suspension of the World Transfer Service
The World Transfer service will be suspended from Mar. 7, 2011 7:00 a.m. PST until the World Merge is complete.

My server is merging with Shiva as well. It's a shame really, Alexander is a much cooler name/summon than Shiva.

I've been told Odin is packed. It should make getting low level exp parties easier, and make everything everyone else does a whole lot harder. Thankfully I'm the only Deadlegend in the world, so I won't have to change my name. That is the only upside.

Suppose now would also be the appropriate time to get the "Sworn to the Dark Divinity" Odin title. By the way these aren't the only servers left, there are 7 or 8 unmentioned servers since they are not being merged.

I was considering rerolling for this very reason. I only have a rank 20 so it wouldn't hurt me THAT much...

I am sad to see our world of Ifrit going to be gone.

Ah damn. DAMN. I wonder, will Ifrit dream?

Solid Snake (below signature) pretty sums up any weepy message I could offer on this topic.

Actually it's probably not dead yet. They'd probably have to boot up the servers to perform the merge (while blocking connections, a maintenance basically).

I was actually planning on logging in on the day before to grab all the stuff out of my delivery box. I had stuff in there I kept simply because it said the "Senders" were various old friends who'd quit. Some of it was expensive stuff too haha, oh well. I guess Ifrit being gone basically cerments that I'll never be going back to the game. Not that I was planning on it, but I always kept my character paid for and active just in case. It should have gone unactive last month though because my credit card expired and I was issued a new one.

Yeah, merge was pushed back to the still unscheduled "Next major update" which has now also been delayed until May.

So does Ifrit live for now? My friends are trying to play again and I don't want to get mixed up servers.

Looks like world passes aren't working at the moment :(

sadly its the ffxi music that always makes me miss it the most. both times i quit long term and came back was when i stumbled across some songs including the one cad posted and it always just sucked me back in to the emotional investment i had in that game.

Such a huge part of my life

Yah, I've tried a handful of MMO's over the years, after FFXI, but none will ever feel like FFXI did. There's a lot of nostalgia there. Makes me sad that we haven't really be able to recreate that in FFXI.

I would have really loved just a reboot of FFXI with better graphics and an eased up LFG requirement. haha.

yeah, I still think FFXIV could become a new FFXI. Companies have me doing a lot of thinking.
