SE announced today that XI:

- Will end service for PS2 and X360 in March 2016. PC/Windows service will continue.

- Will introduce it's final main scenario chapter, entitled "Rhapsodies of Vana'diel" this year.

- Will receive it's "final major version update" in November 2015.

- Will continue to receive "ordinary version updates" to fix bugs and rebalance gameplay.

No servers are shutting down or being merged yet, but FFXI is obviously entering it's final years.

awe, even though i abandoned xi eons ago i still feel very sad about this. i hope they do something epic like how 14 1.0 ended service, because i dont like the idea of 11 just being left out to pasture to dwindle and die on its own.

Let's be honest, we all saw this coming. I never feel like I finished everything I wanted to do in XI; hopefully this year will see enough of a resurgence that maybe I can finish SoA and enjoy the new content. It's funny, I almost shut off my XI account for the first time since 2003 this month because the only thing I've done in the past two years on the game is log in for the daily login events and Mog bonanza stuff on occasion.

Awww...

Yah. I haven't played since right before FF14 v1.0 came out. I resubbed for just a month, or two, and poked around. The game was way different, but I was still super nostalgic about it. Still am, to be honest. It's not surprising, but I guess it is a bit sad. Certainly not the same kind of game it was back then.

It's funny to think about how it brought all of us together \:D/

They should do like Blizzard and give people like Auspice some sort of really cool gift for being a constant subscriber for over 10 years. Some nice figurine, or something.

I was playing it about a year ago. It's still just as good as it always was. I'm sad to see them talk about the end. FF11 combined fun gameplay with social interaction in a way that's proving nearly impossible to match.

Apparently even though the game as it is now is being put to sleep, it's going to have two mobile phone spinoffs in Japan. One as a RPG and one as a MMO. I recall talk ages ago before 14 came out that they wanted to make a vita version of it. I wonder if either of these will be available in English.

I've been playing my vita a lot lately. Logged over a 100 hours into Disgaea 4, I think. I'd be interested to see what they have in store for the Vita.
