XCOM: Enemy Unknown

A bit of backstory on this one. A modern sequel to an early 1990s hit, still regarded as one of the best strategy games of all time. A few years back a company announced it was going to make an XCOM FPS, and everybody hated that it had fell victim to the whole "only way to sell something is a shooter" focus-group nonsense. The game was probably pretty decent, but every chance it got people lambasted it for taking the XCOM name and dancing on it's grave. Eventually the company quietly shelved the project (or at least delayed it indefinitely).

A year later, Firaxis, the guys behind the Civilization series (the only series that still counts as a mainstream turn based strategy anymore) came forward and we're like, "you know what, fuck it, we'll do it" and announced that they were going to make XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the strategy game. The internet rejoiced, because if there was a company that could pull it off today, it was the guys behind Civilization.

So it just came out, and it's awesome. It's getting universal praise from basically everywhere, matching Borderlands 2 on Metacritic. So sure, the game has been modernised, they've simplified a lot of the needless complexity from the original game, in favor of making the game faster but they've done it right.

The game's not quite as brutal as the original. Although soldiers still have permadeath, your starting equipment isn't quite so damn weak. And the game has toned down how the aliens used to camp your ship and mow them down as they made it off the ramp in the first turn like the battle of Normandy. Since I'm playing on "Classic" mode (which is a fancy name for Hard) I play pretty cautiously, keeping my distance and using Overwatch (forego your chance to shoot in return for a free shot on an alien that moves within your line of sight even if it isn't your turn) a lot.

So this video is me playing two missions maybe 8 or so hours in, which is barely scratching the surface. I've only just manufactured my first laser weapon, and equipped a few of my soldiers with new armor. This also happened to be my first encounter with the Mutons, which I get pretty lucky with all things considered, they have a ton of health and my weapons can't kill them in 1 shot anymore. Going to need to think about researching Plasma weapons after this. First mission goes off without a hitch, second mission is a bit more troublesome.

I'm loving XCOM right now, I haven't found a game that could draw my attention for long periods of time in a long time.

Watching the vid, that game looks really cool. I normally hate strategy games because I suck at them lol. This game looks fun though.

Oh yeah Canadians get a full year for mat leave right? My wife has co-workers who live in Vancouver and they were telling me about it. That's crazy.

In USA they give you a couple months tops (2 I think). Most women I know end up using all their vacation time after their mat leave ends, because it wasn't enough.

Go USA. Winning at life once again.

Yeah they get a year I think and the father gets a month... hell the father even has up to one year to take that month off. A few months ago my boss was coming up on that year so he took the month off rather than lose it.

I never played XCOM, but looking through your vid, it seems a lot like it's TD... and I effin love TD games... may have to give this a shot.

Yea I have Cy, I love that episode, his poor guitar lol

I'm always on Steam AIM and MSN!

I have a follow up on XCOM, i'm stuck on a mission right now where I feel so underpowered, everything takes 2 hits or more to kill and on top of that I have to rescue around 15 civilians which the AI rush to and turn into zombies on 1 hit... then the zombies take 2 hits to kill and if left long enough turn into the creature that turned them into a zombie in the first place, it's a nightmare lol.

I'm outnumbered like 3:1 and i'm bound to lose some of my veteran units just attempting to beat the map, never mind trying to save civilians.

New recruits won't cut it at the stage i'm at, I need to find a way to level them up. I'm gonna put my game face on and try and complete this tonight with minimal casualties. Then I need to do some major research into weapons/armor.

I haven't captured many live subjects yet, but I plan to when I have forces that can withstand 2 or more hits from the harder enemies and still have enough HP not to get ambushed while finding a safe place to heal.

Those are Chrysalids, they are XCOM nightmare fuel; even way back in 1993 they were.

When I did that mission, I made sure to bring a second sniper, and kept all six soldiers up top on overwatch, but NOT near the ladder. Both chrysalids and zombies have a ton of HP, and chrysalids themselves can move extremely far in one turn. Keep everyone up top on overwatch over at the far sides and you should be able to kill most of them as they're running around below, and if they come up top you should have plenty time to kill them before they reach you.

Know that you're not expected to save every civilian, you can save little more than half of them and still get a good rating. That said, any civilian you leave alive is another potential zombie. Consider using one move to get to a civ and then your second sprint move to get back away from the front in one turn; use Run n' Gun if you still want to be able to shoot afterwards.

Btw try your absolute hardest to get Snipers to max rank. They get an ability called Double Tap that allows them to shoot twice every turn as long as they don't move, it's like bringing a second sniper with you.

Gonna try this tonight, I don't have many snipers (I think I got a few killed lol), hopefully I can do work on some new recruits.

What makes this current mission even worse is; most of of my high ranked units are injured, leaving me with the 'B Team' for one of the hardest missions i've come across so far.

A few asssault guys with Close Combat Specialist can also help.

It gives you a free reaction shot, even if you didn't use (or already used) Overwatch, if an enemy moves within 4 squares of you, which Chrysalids and zombies will.

Again, these are rank up abilities though. Losing your top ranked guys can really hurt your efforts, I'd honestly recommend you reload saves if you lose them (if you're not playing Ironman). You can hit F10 to quick-save. I usually quick-save any turn I don't have any enemies around.

(Oh and don't forget that Assault guys can actually use normal rifles, they don't have to use shotguns. Helps when you want to keep your distance.)

I finally beat it, but youtube ripped the shit out of it and it's not HD, 480P onry (idk what I changed, i've had a few drinks inbetween, since it took me several tries to complete it.) I got lucky on this attempt, I found out that the map layout is rendered randomly, so saving and re-loading on a difficult mission is a viable option.

I must have played this mission at least 15 times before I got this layout, I got the best possible outcome in the end. I found myself quitting the map on certain turns because the majority of my 'Veteran Troops' were missing at 80+% accuracy in situations where I needed them to hit which made me rage lol.

Victory!

Now I have to prepare for the onslaught down the road.

Ok scratch that, youtube must just take forever to process video. It's now showing HD options long after the video has 'processed'. All is well, even though my FPS seems shite, silly fraps.

P.S. I hate Cyberdiscs, Chrysalids and Zombies.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Final Mission

SPOLIERS AHOY.

I've been enjoying this game so much I felt that I had to record the final mission. The final mission however went on for over an hour so I had to edit lots of it out to make the video length more manageable. It was mostly down-time between encounters, as I tend to edge forward rather cautiously.

This game almost came to an abrupt end about a third of the way through. Not knowing in advance just how damn long it takes to get satellites up and running, I ended up leaving it quite late and almost lost the entire planet to panic while I tried to frantically keep XCOM above the red with only the game's starting funds for at least 3 months. In the end I only lost 3 of them before I was able to get everything back under control.

Let it be known that I think this is easily one of the year's best games. It captures the essence of the original game while still bringing it up to date for the mainstream audience. The game has it's fair share of bugs and things that feel a little dumbed down, but it never sours the overall experience. From what I can tell it's selling really well after getting some major review scores, and this game deserves all the praise and critical acclaim it can get.

I really hope other companies see this title and realise that, hey, strategy games still have a really big market out here. At around 25+ hours to complete the game, it's a pretty decent length, yet still captures the cinematic feel of most modern "over with in 4 hours" games.

Humanity's saviour, Colonel Hwang "Ranger" Kim, shall not be forgotten.

Been a long time since I did something for this thread. I was playing around with the Gamecube/Wii emulator today and decided to have a bit of a play at an old favourite of mine.

Viewtiful Joe

Now here's a great game that lots of people never played, which is sad, because people not buying this and Okami made poor Clover Studio go under. It's a great game, but damn it can be hard too. It's basically a 2D platformer that plays a little bit like a "spectacle fighter" (think Devil May Cry) which is basically because it's made by the same devs.

I'm sure a bunch of you have played around with Dolphin, it plays Wii games pretty well, but it was actually a Gamecube emulator first. Oddly, it doesn't play GC games anywhere near as well as it plays Wii games. Most Wii games I've tried run flawlessly, but the majority of GC games run pretty poorly. That said, this one ran almost perfectly, so I was able to have a blast with it.

Set in "movie land", which is literally inside an old film at the theatre, you play a "super hero" whose powers are based on old cliché film effects, namely slow (bullet time) zoom in (close up) and mach speed (fast forward). Combining them together you get a cool little moveset. The game is dastardly hard, because the majority of enemies will only show weak points if you get up in their face and then dodge their attacks while in melee range.

So here's a random boss I just happened to rock at while I was recording. Sadly it doesn't show off the combo system too much because it's just one enemy, but hey, fun times all around.

I feel like playing some more emulated stuff. Wonder what I should try next. I managed to get the GC version of MGS1 (Twin Snakes) going but it was unstable and the audio was glitchy, so maybe another time.

Oh, if only I could get the multiplayer in Four Swords Adventures working properly. I managed to get four GBA emulators to link to Dolphin. Now I just gotta think of a way to make it work across the Internet...

That game looks pretty fun, I'll have to try it out, I'm usually on point with Capcom games but I missed that one completely.

I've been playing a lot of split-screen games over the past few weeks, going old school with the Dolphin emulator. N64 to USB pad converters and Wii remotes via Bluetooth are pretty damn awesome and make Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Mario 64 all relevant again, it's pretty damn fun playing those games on a big screen TV with 4 people once again.

One game that I'll be playing shortly is 'Injustice: Gods Among Us' it looks like a DC version of Marvel Vs Capcom. I've heard nothing but good things about it so far.

I played Viewtful Joe 2 back in the day but it was really quite difficult for me so I never made it very far. I did like its premise and general aesthetic, but I'm just bad at games so couldn't progress easily.

Ket I recently had to use Hamachi for my Terraria server because my friend and I couldn't connect to each other for some reason. That might be a way to play Four Swords together if it doesn't lag too much.

I finally recorded something new! Picked this up in the steam sale this weekend for 75% off.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

I'd heard quite a few good things about this one, and so far it hasn't disappoint. It's basically a kart racer, sure, but it seems pretty well balanced out of what I've played so far. Levels are pretty varied, the drifting feels tight, and the weapons are useful without being overpowered. Could be because I'm just on medium difficulty, but it doesn't feel like the game is intentionally giving you the crap weapons if you're up front, and all the game-breaking win-button weapons if you're behind. That and rubber-banding (which I've also not noticed yet) annoys the hell out of me in Mario Kart.

The transform mechanic feels a lot better used than Mario Kart 7. In general, most stages will end up having something happen that requires you to take different routes on subsequent laps, meaning taking to the sea or skies where you maybe didn't before on the previous lap. I've even come across a few stages where you get multiple routes that determine which mode of transport you end up using for a particular segment. For example, hitting a ramp will launch you into the air and into jet mode, while not using the ramp will have you go into boat form.

Oh and so far, it looks like there's no "blue shell bullshit" (you know exactly what I mean) which is a big plus in my book. Gets a thumbs up.

Me, Krellis and Soul have been playing sonic racing, and it's pretty awesome.

Just got off of playing it for like 3 hours straight, and I think we all know who the undisputed champion was.

I really wish I had fraps running. Pretty sure I'm gonna make sure I do next time we play.
