So I think my PS3 finally bit the dust. It shut off as I was playing and the red light kept flashing. I am guessing this is the YLOD, but it will still boot up to the XMB for a little bit.

Have any of you tried fixing this? I have been reading up on the two different ways to fix it and I think I might be crazy enough to try reballing this thing. There are some people selling it as a service on eBay for $80-100, but I think I could probably do it for half or less after buying all the supplies. I'm hoping for some encouragement more than anything since it feels so hopeless right now.

i had a similar problem years ago with the 60GB version.

i remember reading about the most common cause and solution for that, although it was over my head. it actually involved welding. i have a friend who is a professional welder, and i told him if he could fix it, he could keep it (i had already bought a new one). and sure enough he fixed it...and kept it...and used it.

Sounds like it's overheating.

Get a can of compressed air and blast the vents.

I do try to keep it clean. I did blow it out and got some dust, but not a lot. I don't think it was running very hot because it was cool to touch not long afterwards. I might try it again when I get home and see how it goes.

Whisp, the main problem with the old models is the solder cracking and need replaced, which I guess is a form of welding. From my research, it doesn't look like it's hard to do but takes a while so patience is necessary. I may document it if I do it just for future reference.
