Those spiders are disgusting. Don't get me wrong - I don't like spiders crawling on my walls and such, and I definitely don't like that freakishly mean looking thing. But fuzzy tarantulas in cages are okay. I wouldn't want one on my face or anything though.

Updates!

Chola, the baby versicolor, molted today for the first time in my care.

The pictures are somewhat fuzzy, and the flash makes a horrible glare. She looks like she'll make it through it ok, and I think her two missing legs are growing back.

She probably grew about a quarter of an inch and will be a considerably brighter blue in 2-3 days. Right now she's opaque in a lot of spots.

Here's Charlie eating his first cricket in his new home.

Here's Lola pissed off... she doesn't like being poked with straws. I was trying to get her out of the critter keeper into her new terrarium. She stayed in this position for about 3 hours.

Image

Here are two more nice shots of Lola. You can see a little of how her body is a pretty, metallic coral.

How do they behave? I know they won't act like normal house pets such as cat's or dogs as far as affection goes, but do they seem like they'll at least remember who you are from time to time?

It really depends on the species. My two species are typically pretty docile... they won't charge you and attack, but I won't handle them either. Charlie will bite if you touch him with anything... Lola just goes into her defense statue. I think maybe after I have them for 6 months or so I could handle Lola, but not Charlie. I think Chola, the baby, will be able to be handled without fear of bites in about 2-3 months. I think they recognize you if you handle them fairly routinely, but I, personally, don't believe a spider is ever affectionate. There are those on forums who disagree though. They say theirs just loves to be handled and will run onto your hand as soon you put it down and try to escape from being put back... I'll tell you my opinion on it again in a year or so when I have more experience, but for now they're 'look but don't touch' pets.

The entire reason to have a pet is because they're compassionate loyal companions. The only reason to have spiders as pets is to show how eccentric you are, because remember, I'm the guy who keeps TARANTULAS as pets remember!!!!

I remember getting emailed about those and looking it up. They really don't get that big haha. 5" max leg to leg.

Not really, Ponuh. I think they're incredibly fascinating, as well as beautiful. Some things they're capable of doing are amazing. I've spent countless hours studying and observing them. It has nothing to do with eccentricity.

A person can think something is beautiful even if they can't touch it.

I see spiders as pet sorta like fish, more for decoration then entertainment/compassion. But I am sure a spider is much more fun to feed then fish.

Piranhas might be fun to feed. Drop a cow in the tank and watch them go.

Wouldn't be nearly as fun as tossing you in the tank though...

I was thinking more along the lines of a moat around my house stocked with piranhas. I know most people don't have those resources, that is why it is a joke. Still, it would be fun to do.
