i played it for about 2 days before deciding to cancel my preorder. i think any enjoyment i got from it was pure ffxi nostalgia... everything about the game just seems sloppily designed to me. not going to bother playing it lol

I would totally play FFXI right now if i could find a group of people to play with, and could recover my account. That being said it is also a reason i am looking forward to ffxiv. It is not the same, but it shows promise. Also i have not pre-ordered for this same reason.

One thing to remember is: This is a Beta, this is probably not everything SE has to throw at us at launch. (hopefully). If SE could communicate properly they maybe would tell us something along those lines. Maybe I am just trying to be positive.

I haven't tried open beta yet because I don't want to spoil anything from the retail version, but I kinda feel the same way J. I'm not sure if I have it in me to play another MMO but I'm going to give it a shot.

I felt the same way about it at first J, you need to give it more time. The game is still pretty rough. I dont think this game will hit its stride until about Jan 2011.

I felt the same until recently. The game has a lot of potential, its REALLY different and I think there are great adventures ahead. I also have nostalgia for FFXI but when I think of all the damn hours I spent waiting for parties, camping NM's ugh . I dont have the time nowadays to spend 8-10 hours a day on the game and I dont want to. I like the idea of being able to play a few hours and still enjoy all the benefits that the game offers and I'm sure others will too. The important thing for me is a good community of people to play with. WoW has a hardware mouse, AH, nice UI, blah blah but the community sucks, you have to be an officer in a guild and raid 5 hours a night going through the same damn instances over and over to get any good gear, and if you dont you will be ignored by everyone "LFM for IC only leet players with a 8k GS, must have ALL achievements done" It's not for me anymore. FFXIV fits in my schedule very well and I'm looking forward to playing.

To me, this game has no relation to FF11, aside from the fact that it has renamed mithra in it.
I guess that's good in a way, that the game has its own identity.

Guild Leves are by far the saving grace for me in this game. I hope to get to do them often, and that they continue to be creative with them.

They've certainly improved on the ability to travel. I can only assume that chocobos and airships will be roadblocked with level requirements and quests. But to be honest, they're a mere convience right now.

What confuses me is that SE made travel much easier, yet made everything else a very long tiedious grind.

I don't expect them to release all their planned content at once at release. We'll probably have the chocobos and airships in place, with a roadblock. They mentioned each city will have some sort of "tourist attraction" but the only two mentioned by name were a casino and battle stadium in uldah. I'm not sure if those, and whatever is in the other two cities, will be available on release. I somewhat figure they wont right away. If they were it would be interesting.

As for now, there's not a whole lot to hold my attention. Most the time I feel liek I'm grinding, but not having fun doing it. At the very least, I'm still accomplishing something rather than standing around jeuno with a seek party flag up heh.

Things that they really need to fix:

-The downloader/patcher. Its absolutely unacceptable that players have to seek out and physically patch the game themselves. And let's face it, a lot of players who will buy the retail will probably not have the knowledge to do so. There's no excuse to have to wait 3 hours for 1kb of a patch that never comes.
The fact that its been broken from the first alpha, and still hasnt been addressed, makes me believe that it never will be.

-Better monster population. I am going to optimistically assume that the placement of mobs in open beta is temporary. There just isnt enough around to make viable parties. If you were to play with yourself or in a group you spend the majority of your time running long stretches trying to find something to kill. The zones are so huge, and yet most of them are very vaccant. I get that SE wants people to have roaming parties, but a whole lot of roaming and no party is a little extreme. Let's just hope that SE plants large concentrations of monsters in more locale.

-Durability limits. Durability by definition is, "lastingness: permanence by virtue of the power to resist damage or wear," not I'm running around in broken underwear I cant fix after 2 days of play. So far armor and weapons in this game wear down far too quickly, and the punishment for having a worn, mind not totaly broken, weapon or armor is far too harsh. It upsets me that i have to buy a new weapon every 2 days because no one can fix the one I have and if I don't, I jsut dont get any skill points. I can't imagine camping an nm for months SE style to finally get a rare drop armor or weapon from it, just to have it break on you after using it only once or twice. Unless you have the time and money to raise all the crafts yourself, or have really good friends to hound on constant, you'll likely always be in a permanent state of nerf.
Fixing an item via a crafter should last you at least a few weeks, not a few days.

-SE didnt install the auction houses for about 3 weeks into FF11's release. I'm hoping that they eventually do the same for 14. Although I fail to see how it "establishes the economy" by omitting it from launch. They seem enamoured with the terrible market ward idea, and I'm pretty sure they realize that once an auction house is in place, hardly anyone will bother shopping in the wards. Since they have a financial gain from selling you a retainer, they are hesitant to add the auction house. The impression they give in interviews is that they'd rather not have one at all. Whilest the retainer idea isnt per se, a bad one entirely, its nothing in comparison to the ease of an auction house. I hope that auction houses and delivery boxes will be in the game sooner than later.

I know that first launch mmo's are a work in progress so I'm in a wait and see posistion. If they were to fix the things I mentioned I'd at least be content to jump on and grind on ocassion.
However, for a lot of people, the game might be better played a year from now. Most MMO's are content shy the first year.

For the record though, it feels to me that SE was really trying hard to avoid all the negatives in ff11 such as making helming and crafting harder to bot, or making the game soloable, but I feel that they didnt take any of the positives from 11. There were so many things that were good, even brilliant ideas in 11 that they seem to have taken a step backwards in 14. Or tried to take the idea and make it needlessly complicated.

March 2011. There'll be a mad rush to fix the game before the PS3 release, since the PC version is probably going to get slammed by reviewers and players alike when it launches on PC, and the PS3 release will be their last chance to get a big following.

I already wrote a big post about it somewhere so I won't spend forever repeating myself. But basically, the game is fun, but it's extremely rough and feels unfinished in areas, and SE have made some weird descisions they'll be forced to turn back on in a couple months (like the fatigue stuff, and refusal to put an AH in).

I agree that you need to play it for a couple weeks first, at least get out of rank 1-10, because it's hard to find mobs and your battles consist of just spamming the attack button for 30 seconds. Once you get around 15+ and start doing leves in groups it gets fun. I just wish the LQ delay was 1 day instead of 2. Again, these are things SE will likely be made to change later.

FFXIV so far hasn't impressed me much either, but I do keep in mind that we were sort of spoiled with FFXI. SE had a good year and a couple of months to iron out a lot of bugs and flesh out (add on) a lot of features in FFXI. The FFXI first released on PS2 in Japan was a completely different product from the FFXI released to us in North America on PC (a full year and a couple months later).

I do'nt mind rough edges, what I really mind and I don't like is how SE is still being stubborn SE. I swear, it's that Asian mentality and stubbornness that drives me insane and leaves me completely flabbergasted.

I would just say SE stubbornness, as i've had really good experiences with other asian developers recently, but yeah SE can be frustrating.

As far as the game goes, I was coming into it expecting trash because of everyones horror stories from the closed betas, and also because it lacks PVP and pet classes (( two extremely important factors for me )) however since playing the game i've had nothing but a completely fun and unique gaming experience. Sure it is rough, all games are at launch; and I am assuming pvp and pet classes will be added eventually, like they were in FFXI. I see alot of potential in this game and i'm even enjoying it as is, the class system is really really fun and the graphics are s-t-u-n-n-i-n-g for an MMO.

only complaint, assuming SE will fix the -must be fixed to be successful- things (( such as the UI lag, mouse stupidity, AH stupidity, ect )) is that the character customization in this game is appauling. There are no sliders, and the amount of hairstyles for each race/gender makes me want to slap SE in the face. Anyone who has played games such as AoC or Aion knows what customization should be. I only can pray they atleast have dyeable armor so everyone doesnt look the same like they did in ffxi.

I agree with the character customization thing. I wish they had a lot more things to change, since even though there are more choices, everyone is still going to look pretty much the same after a while.

Also whoah Madi when did you get back?

I for one do not intend to play at launch any longer. I may give it a go at a later time, but for all the "potential" that exists I am simply unwilling to pay for a game while it goes through six months of beta testing to get the game where it needs to be for an employable experience all around.

I feel like I have more free time out of school. I finally have my weekends to myself again, and I'm not either in class or at work all day. It's awesome.

When I first heard about FFXIV, I said there's no way I would play another SE MMO. I just couldn't believe they had learned their lessons from FFXI. Instead, I spent all my time raving about Aion. That obviously didn't turn out too well.

The more I read about FFXIV the more it intrigued me. When they started doing the beta, I decided it was worth the $7 to try the beta to see if I wanted to play the game. I came into the beta with that same mindset; Game might have some neat features, but SE is still braindead. I was not disappointed.

The plus side of this is rather than be disappointed by all the mistakes, I'm enjoying the things they got right. Now I'm pretty sure I'm going to pre-order the CE. Pretty crazy.

Ok, I have to give you that. Sadly, I have soo much stuff going on that my weekends feel non-existent. I will buy the collectors edition and put it away :P. My biggest fear is that the end-game WILL require a lot of time and it sucks not being able to participate.

It's called a Sombrero you goddamn subhuman. Also, considering the one month mark may be met around November, if this does happen I will fly back to NYC document this event and eat early Thanksgiving burritos con tu familia.

Retail will probably last a while since beta sucks

I base this opinion off the fact that it seems that any game where I had a good time in beta ends up being a pile of shit. For example, Asheron's Call 2 and AION both had fun betas, and they both suck balls right now (although AC2 is long dead).

Also, the fact that I hated FFXIV when I first played it is a good sign, since I felt the same about FFXI and then got addicted and met all of you guys :P
