Restoration of Game Services (Mar. 22)

As part of power conservation measures enacted following the Tohoku earthquake, our game servers were shut down on Mar. 13, 2011 10:00 (GMT) and services for FINAL FANTASY XIV, FINAL FANTASY XI, and PlayOnline (hereafter referred to as "these services") were temporarily suspended. We have determined a date for the restoration of these services, and would like to share this information with you.

Operating the servers for these services makes up 11.6% of the total power consumed by our Tokyo office (based on February 2011 records). We have shut down our air conditioning system (8.8%) and enacted other power conservation measures, such as reducing lighting in our offices, to achieve over 10% in energy usage reductions. With these energy saving measures in place, we will be able to bring our servers back online and restore service to FINAL FANTASY XIV, FINAL FANTASY XI, and PlayOnline on Mar. 25, 2011 11:00 (GMT). All other services, such as those offered on the PlayOnline website, that were temporarily suspended will also be restored at the same time. Please be aware, however, that we may once again be required to suspend services in the event that the power situation worsens.

We offer our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension of these services, and thank you for your understanding. As noted in our original notice regarding the suspension of these services, customers will not be charged any monthly fees for FINAL FANTASY XI throughout the April billing cycle.

We at the Square Enix group are trying to act in a proactive manner in order to provide support towards the relief and restoration efforts in the face of this unprecedented disaster while providing reliable service to our customers, and we thank you for your understanding and support.

I can't help but feel that turning off the air conditioning isn't a great way to get enough power for your servers. Servers tend to get rather hot.

Question is, how many people will still be here.

haha reading about air condition shut down is pretty funny. I cant believe ther servers only consume 12% of their total power supply. They prob skewed these stats to make ppl in tokyo happy tho lol. I'm happy the game is coming back on line, hopefully everyone will still be playing.

I'm with you Ket...

Like computers, I always thought servers need to be kept cool. Maybe they mean air conditioning to the rest of their facility...

Awe I was hoping for sooner than another work week.

Ah well good to hear. I am a little confused by the ac thing as well, I doubt they mean building hvac as it is still winter-esque weather there. My only assumption is the mean the servers cooling system itslef which I find surprising that they /can/ turn those off.

Well hopefully they have the servers in their own closet area. I'm sure they're referring to AC for the general office areas.

I'm sad they still haven't announced a patch to go alongside bringing the servers online. Having the servers off for two weeks seemed like a great time to do something big like changing the battle system or something. As far as I can tell they have been at their offices this whole time.

Im sure they are working on something, but probably cant test it since their test servers might be down as well. Im sure they arent getting paid to drink tea and write haikus.

I'm really hoping that while the servers were offline, that that our anima/GA was still filling. Clearly it couldn't have happened while the servers were 'offline', but depending on the algorithm they use for refreshing it, it may go back and restore stuff for missed timers.

Really hoping I come back to 100/200 anima/ga.

I'm not 100% sure but I'm going to guess they do. We've had some 8-hour long maintenances in the past and I dont recall losing out on anima over it.

I mean, all the system even needs to do is look at when the character was last logged in and calculate how many total hours is between then and now. It'd be like, less than 10 lines of code, and it could just do it as each character logs in, there wouldn't even be a need to batch process them all. Actually, thinking about it, this is probably be the best way to do it even while your server is online.

11:00 GMT is like 6AM EST isn't it? We usually don't do finish leves until 10 mins before you're home from work Yarr. ](*,)

But seriously this is why we need that crazy sign up thing I was talking about in private sections...so what time is everyone gonna be ready?

i was under the assumption that the server calculated things based on real time, unlike ff11. If that's so, we shoudl wake up to full anima.

Got to log in and get leves done before Yarr gets online.

J/K. I think the problem with leves is that people have itchy trigger fingers in respect to getting their leves done every day (or two) or fear losing out on the free exp when they reset. One person logs on and says "I wanna do leves" and everyone jumps on the chance.

I'm glad to hear servers are back online!

I always had an itchy trigger finger with leves. Mainly because when I had 7/8 people waiting an hour for 1 more person to login, people start going afk or doing other things. By the time the 8th person gets online, I'd end up waiting for 2 people to finish dinner and another person to get back from the store. It ends up taking another hour to get started and I slam my head on the keyboard.

I think Ket's right. Especially if we try to accomodate Dmitry and Armani, since those two log out pretty early by comparison. Hard to accomodate everyone.

I'm anxious to get CNJ to 50, so I can kick back and just casually fish/craft. I'm not interested in ranking up non-mage jobs in an effort to keep me from OCDing on getting all jobs up. haha.

Edit: In fact, my sig has all the jobs I really care about. Tanning not so much, but until we get a dedicated tanner, I'm leaving it on there.
