Naoki Yoshida took the stage once again with the announcement that Phase 3 of the game’s beta test will commence in June pending Sony’s certification on the PS3 client. While he apologizes for the delay, he promises that the final open beta phase will be pushed out soon after.

Some (Phase 3 ?) screenshots appeared on Facebook somewhere.

Spot the difference?

- Some kind of large button on the map, can't read it. (EDIT: Apparently this says "World Map")
- A few extra little buttons on the map, left side, glowing.
- Current level shown on party list, presumably shows for other members.
- Party member number is shown to right of job icon alongside name instead of on left of icon.
- Glow around the HP/MP/TP bars, doesn't line up with current values. Perhaps shows regen?
- Inventory icons (dots) are now horizontal and flat instead of a 2x2 grid.
- Two new icons on the micro menu, I think. A treasure chest (presumably loot button) and some kind of diamond shaped grid; Possibly the new Armoury Board (gear set system replacement)?
- Chat log text looked sharpened/brighter.
- Current time in top right looks like it has an outline of a barely different colour, making it hard to read.
- New emote icons that aren't just plain happy/neutral/sad.
- MP costs (?) on ability icons now centered and not coloured.

They've definitely done something to the lighting, it's not quite as contrasted as it was in Alpha. Shadows looked too dark and bright areas looked too bright, giving the game an odd almost cel-shaded look and it looked weird and hard to describe.

Game's looking great now that it's all smoothed out.

Shame we're at least another month away from the big "beta 3".

Im excited. Im ok with as many delays as they want. Its like we're getting a brand new game with characters already at end game.

Those screenshots look amazing. I haven't been available to do the beta but I kind of want to keep it fresh for when it goes live. I think it would be neat if they launched it on the anniversary of the first launch.

No way, that's another 4 and a half months away... The screenshots do look awesome... lighting (not lightning like SE seems to think) is everything.

Very nice I am liking the engine I just hope they fixed the black/yellow screen tearing on the trees I experienced during the beta, as well as invisible trees that popped up out of nowhere until you view it at an angle.

Letter XLV

http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/61825

Naoki Yoshida wrote:
Letter from the Producer, XLV (05/10/2013)

Hello again to all of you eagerly awaiting FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn. I know I haven't been pumping out letters as often as I used to, but we've all been working feverishly in preparation for phase 3 of the beta test. Nevertheless, I couldn't let another day go by without bringing you the forty-fifth Letter from the Producer!

We recently attended the Niconico Chokaigi 2 event here in Japan, and I'd like to give a big thanks to everyone who showed up in person, as well as all of you who tuned in from afar. After traveling overseas to events last year like E3, Japan Expo, and Gamescom, it was nice to finally have one here at home. In case you haven't heard through the grapevine yet, we made two important announcements at the event, which I'd like to go over in this letter.

First and foremost, FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn will be released in summer 2013. It will be a worldwide release for the PC and PlayStation 3, available in Japanese, English, French, and German. At the end of the month we'll announce the release date, along with pricing and details on the collector's edition. We'll also start accepting preorders at the end of the month.

Our second important announcement was that phase 3 will start at the beginning of June. Phase 3 will include a multitude of changes based on feedback from the first and second phases, as well as the long-awaited commencement of PlayStation 3 testing. But that's not all—we're also adding Ul'dah and Limsa Lominsa, nearly one hundred new FATE encounters, four additional dungeons, main scenario quests up to level 20, grand companies, provisioning missions, free companies; we're making revisions to the battle system, testing the transfer of characters from version 1.0—the list goes on and on. I've been working around the clock, double and triple checking everything along the way, so sit tight and phase 3 will be here before you know it!

It's not just me though—the whole team has been working at full throttle to ensure the game will be ready for a summer release. It won't be long before you can mark your calendars and begin the final countdown!

With phase 2 of the beta test now at an end, I know our beta testers are feeling a bit anxious waiting for phase 3. If the forums are any indication, a good number of you seem to be going through withdrawal, which is a good thing...I think. Anywho, since you all still have a while to wait until phase 3, I found a little something that might help tide you over.

Well, that's all I can give you for now. I'll see you all next time in my seventh LIVE letter. And not long after that, I'll be headed to E3. If you're in America, make sure to drop by!! :)

Also, the main website (that's http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/ for those of you who don't keep track of these things) has also had a whole bunch of screenshots of each of the three regions uploaded. Also a bestiary with screenshots of the various monsters and even Odin and Bahamut.

The Black Shroud

La Noscea

Thanalan

Odin

Quote:
A fell knight clad all in black, Odin roams paths long forgotten beneath the canopy of the Black Shroud.

There are none now alive who know the truth of when or by whom this elder primal was first summoned into the world. Ever vigilant as he sits astride his mighty steed, Sleipnir, it is said that Odin is drivenly solely by the desire to do battle with worthy foes.

Image

Bahamut

Quote:
Held in duress for aeons within the lesser moon, Dalamud, the elder primal Bahamut broke free of his captivity when the celestial body was wrested from the heavens to descend upon the Battle of Carteneau. Once freed, the terrible being wrought fiery destruction across the length and breadth of Eorzea, his devastating rampage marking the beginning the Seventh Umbral Era. In the midst of the chaos, however, Bahamut was enveloped in a blinding white light and abruptly disappeared from the skies. None claim to have seen the primal in the five years since.
