So, the Vanity System finally hits in 2 weeks. Some of that useless (but nice looking) gear shall now become useful! Anybody got any plans? Anything in mind?

A reminder of the rules and how it works:
  • Vanity system works by copying the appearance of an item and placing that appearance on another piece of gear. The new gear keeps it's original stats but takes on the appearance of the copied item.
  • The name of the item changes to the copied item's name. If you copy a Coliseum Shawl onto an Allagan Robe of Casting, the item will be renamed to Coliseum Shawl, but have all the stats of the Allagan Robe. A small red looking icon will appear where the gear dye color usually is to signify the item has been altered. Oddly, it keeps the original gears' icon.
  • The "copied" gear is not lost during the process, and is only required in your inventory for the copying process. You can put it back on a retainer afterwards. It is not mentioned whether the gear becomes bound and whether you can just sell gear back after copying it.
  • While not explicitly mentioned as possible, weapons are shown in the list on the menu so you should be able to do it to weapons too.
  • A catalyst is required to make the copy, which comes in different grades. Almost exactly the same as materia catalysts. They seem to come from crafting/gathering, and are not only graded but specific to a tradecraft. Presumably you need a Leatherworker prism to copy gear normally repaired by a leatherworker.
  • An item can be reverted back to it's original state; it's an option on the menu. Unsure if a catalyst is required to do this.
  • It was mentioned in the past that vanity gear will not work in PvP. Presumably the item will turn back into it's normal look while inside the Wolves' Den.
  • You must be able to equip the gear you wish to use as vanity -- No wearing plate armor on mages, nor can you wear another job's AF armor.
  • The copied item must be of equal or lower level to the equipped gear -- No making your level 20 monk look like it's wearing gear you picked up from Coil.
  • The gear you're wearing and the gear you're copying must occupy the same number of armor slots! Cowls (Body+Head) cannot be made to only occupy the body slot or vice versa -- Sadly that means no copying the Odin armor.

Screenshots from the promotional site: (Not only is this guy a hacker and wearing two Hero's Rings of Slaying, but they're blue tier instead of green now?)

So, given the above list, is there anything people are interested in trying?

Notably, there appears to be no rule that states you can't use seasonal event gear. Other than gear that occupies lots of slots (reindeer suit), the likes of bikinis, reindeer hats, santa outfits, Lightning/Snow set, valentine's apron, etc, are all fair game.

Are some of you looking to turn your armor into bikinis?

Anybody want to wear the crystal tower armor sets over their myth sets?

Will Kio be permanently wearing that Chocobo mask?

Is there a cool set of lower level dungeon gear you'd rather be wearing (battlemage/foestriker set)?

Will Rushal ever remove his reindeer hat?

Can tanks finally go back to wearing shields and not Allagan Dinnerplates?

Subligars. Subligars everywhere.

Maybe you'd like to always be wearing that Gamblers/Butchers Crown?

Are we going to be farming Thornmarch for endless amounts of Moogle popup books?

Personally, my AF2 armor would be my choice of armor for Paladin anyway so I wouldn't change anything there. However, it'd be nice to not have to wear that goofy face covering black mage AF hat. Also the Royal Vest from CT looks nicer than the WHM AF2 vest IMO. During seasonal events (Christmas, etc) I'd also consider replacing my entire set with Christmas stuff to raid dungeons in.

What are your plans? Lets hear them!

I like bard AF2 personally but I might switch to coliseum, foe striker or something seasonal for a change of pace, I don't really recall any mid level Leather sets looking particularly good overall.
Some gear like Lightning's is actually pretty decent for mix and matching, so we'll see.

personally my favorite sets tend to be the dungeon cloth sets, both acolytes and battle mage all look swell, so little jelly =P

Nice, Ket answered all questions I had about the vanity system, thanks!

I like the idea of using the royal body over WHM AF2. I now want the royal pants so I can toss them over the WHM AF2 boxer shorts!!! Very happy about that! The stats rock, but they are so horrible looking.

For BLM I will use glacial coat, boots, and gamblers crown! I love how ridiculous that combo looks.

I need to decide what to do for BRD and SCH. I'm not a huge fan of their AF+1 look.

I will forever regret being lazy and not farming the FF13 weapons. I am now interested in farming mog weapons though!!!! I want popup books!

It should be fun seeing everybody wearing random combinations of outfits now.

Assuming you can use bikinis then my MNK will forever be wearing a bikini to play in :)

Other than that there is not much i want to change depending on how the new end game gear sets look, like the tank one looks more for warrior so probably would keep the PLD AF2 look for that

I was thinking about making a David The Gnome vanity set for something. But I dunno which job. haha.

A lot of this will depend on what the new armor is we get access to, because some of those screenshots look pretty awesome.

I'm fine with all my regular looks. Might change fishing and mining gear to more traditional doublets or slightly less goofy pants and shoes. Botanist looks great.

Foestriker is nice for DoW but I like my Drg/Brd/Pld looks overall, though I might prism my allagan dragoon boots into Wyrm boots. Only thing I'd change right now is getting my scholar and summoner back into their skirts. hoho.

A quick update to how this works:

http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone ... 5da7227deb

You can make a cowl look like a single-slot robe.
(You will not be able to equip anything in the head slot still.)

You cannot make a single-slot robe look like a cowl.
(The head slot would be covered, yet you need to be able to equip gear there, so this doesn't work.)

Copying an item's appearance will bind the item to you. No buying gear, copying it, then selling it back.

You need to complete a quest in Mor Dhona to use Vanity gear.

In the event that your current job cannot equip the "projected" item, it will look like the base item. For example, if you have a basic Cotton Robe, and make it look like a Healer's Robe, it will only look like a Healer's Robe while you are on WHM. Though a BLM can equip a Cotton Robe, it cannot equip a Healer's Robe, so it will look like a Cotton Robe while you're on BLM.

I really like the new look of that healer armor we'll be getting with tomestones. It reminds me a lot of that first, or second tier priest gear from Vanilla wow. I always thought that set was pretty awesome with its golds and reds.

I'll unlock vanity, for sure, but I'll probably hold off before I come up with a set, as I want to see what ends up being popular.

meh. Not really impressed, but I do agree with Ridere. It looks like one of the original priest sets from wow.

I think it'll look good on a lalafell, where there's less of the white, due to our small stature. In theory, at least. hehe. But you never know.

I'll be gearing up SMN first, of course. no clue how/what that's going to look like.

Post subject:  Re: Vanity Thread

But my pic IS on a Lalafell omgs.

Anyhow back on topic, unless something really awesome looking comes along I'll probably just stick to my PLD AF (3). That armor is partly the reason I started with PLD back in XI.

What I'm most excited about is the ability to be able to mix/match "best in slot" pieces (e.g. Allagan Helm + Surcoat Body + Allagan Gloves + Valor Feet, etc) for stats and not look like a jumbled mess by making it all look like one set of gear.

k, I checked it on my phone, Ket. Yah, it looks awesome on a lala. I like that look a lot. And I do agree with liking the AF's in general, too. I'm a huge fan of WHM AF, ever since being amazed at seeing someone wearing it, while I was at the auction house in Bastok Markets.

SMN af in this game is also really cool.
