I eventually will try figure pictures outside. Want to be more comfortable shooting on manual first as I just started fiddling with all this (lighting, manual camera settings) in the past two weeks, always shot on auto before -- hue hue hue. Right now, my picture are a bit too bright.

It is easier to practice indoors -- can randomly set up and shoot anytime.

outside I usually just shoot in Aperture priority mode, with an ISO of 100 if its bright out. Street shooting i still go with Aperture priority and slightly bump up the iso or go with auto iso have it cap at 1600.

the only time i really use manual is if i have the time and can have control of all the lighting.

Aperature and shutter priority modes are a great way to work into full manual shooting. They help you get a better feel for exposure. I still use them 75% of the time especially if I'm moving a lot during a shoot. Or my subject is. The light change can be so minute but still fuck up your exposure pretty easily.

theres plenty of online tutorials that will teach you about aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I think your pictures are looking pretty good.

I should redo this shot and move light around so the shadow from strand of hair on face isn't so harsh/pronounce

OH! Can't wait to see those finished. :)

I'm using a Canon EOS Rebel XS
The above shot with one of the lens that came bundled (I think it was bundled)
EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III

Earlier shots were with:
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6

Re-shot, not quite the exact same angle (and more zoomed in) with a little softer lighting

yeah thats the one, should be fun and its a nice and sharp lens so its going to be interesting in comparing it with the 35mm and 50mm.

one critique on the last picture you posted is that her head is kinda cut off. if you move the camera up a little bit we can see the rest of her hair. think of it kinda like potrait photography.

most item photography people like using an f-stop like from 8 and up to get the item in focus and as sharp as possible. the Sazabi picture i took was at f14 to get all the bits as sharp as possible. But I also like my Bokeh(blurred bits) so I tend to shoot wide open.

other suggestions if the shutter speed is a lower number than your lens, like if your shooting at 300mm and your shutter speed is 1/150, you will need to use a tripod and either set a timer or use a remote to take the picture. reduces the shakyness from when you press down on the shutter button.

Yeah - I was reading up on f-stop and shutter speed relationship a bit yesterday.
When you say 8 and up, you mean (8, 6, 4, 2, 1/4...etc right?)

I need to work on composition and framing for my shots -- thanks for the tips!

I'll likely look into getting some lens down the line.

nah i mean the f-stop, like one of your lenses "wide open" is f/4 and then you can increase the number from there up to f/8, f/11 ect.
if you set your camera to manual, and just play with the aperture you can see the difference between f/4 and f/11, f/11 will be darker cause less light is getting through the lens but more stuff will be in focus.

First time I checked this thread haha! Awesome stuff. I used to paint figurines before I had kids! I should get back into that junk, it's somewhat therapeutic. I'm a camera person, too OMG! I use a Nikon D90. I generally do natural light photography of my kids and junk outside.
