If you're not afraid of leaking, go with the Corsair H70 instead of the Zalman cooler. It's rare for it to leak anyway and Corsair will replace everything it wrecks if in fact it does leak.

FFXIV runs at capped FPS for me pretty much everywhere except for towns, which I'd say are still above 40-50 FPS since I don't feel any hit (I only did an official FRAPs check when I first got my GTX580 on my dual core, which ran the game at 60 FPS everywhere cept towns where the CPU would come into play and drop my FPS to 15-20 which was very noticeable). This is with 16x CSAA and everything maxed except for General Drawing being set to standard (8).

Other games like BFBC2 which ran like shit for me before, even with 0x AA and HBAO off, now run awesomely with everything on and 32x CSAA. Granted, this is probably due to the GTX580, but it just shows that it's worth it to get it. However, I would say replace the GTX580 with a 480 or two 460s if you don't want to spend that much. The 4XX series is pretty cheap right now. Another alternative is to go ATI of course, with the 5970 for around $299. Then again, if you want to be future-proof for a while, the GTX580 should be able to handle a lot of shit in the next few years.

So...if you are postponing this upgrade, what could someone do to contribute to said upgrade as a Christmas gift? Money? Gift card? Cheque? Please advise...I've already set up a Newegg account - if that isn't Christmasy enough for you...haha

- I stand by the others on the I7-950...I have one as well.

- I like Noctua brand cpu coolers but you always have to double check size vs. size of your case with almost every cooler you look at buying...that Zalman does look good though.

- No comments on Ram, research and just find some...I went with Mushkin.

- TIMM - Keeping your cpu cooler by 4 or 5 degrees may be hype or it may be truth but apparently there are some better Thermal pastes out other than Arctic Silver 5.

*by far the longest yet more informative reviews I read about the stuff:
http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?o ... &Itemid=62

Agree with everyone's comments on over-clocking. I'm running 4.15 on air. I went with GTX 470 from the comments I always read about 480's running too hot but I'm sure it is an irrelevant issue now maybe.

One thing I love about Newegg is sometimes they bundle things...

OK Ive made my mind up. I will be going with the following CPU/Motherboard/RAM

ASUS P8P67 Pro 189.99
Intel Core i7-2600K 329.99
8gig(4g x2) DDR3-1600 108.99

Im ordering from Newegg.ca and they have a combo with the board\CPU for about 20-30 bucks less, but it comes with a free copy of Civ5. The total cost with shipping should be about 708 with tax. I feel good that the value is right with this setup. The only thing this PC doesnt have that I wanted was tripple channel ram, but thats not a big loss.

The new CPUs don't need triple channel for the i7s?

You will rue the day you decided on an asus mb. RUE I tells you!

In all honesty, though I heavily advise you against it. Right now they're having major issues and the company is trying to cover it up. If yours should be effected, its basically throwing however much you paid for it in the garbage along with the mb. It will not be repaired nor replaced.

I will add on that ASUS sent me a bad video card recently, but they did replace it with another one. Not sure about their mobos, aside from I have one that will power on.

Im having one problem. My power supply is making an annoying squelch and Im not sure why. The sound fluctuates with how much load is on the CPU. Its really annoying. I cant figure out how to stop it.

The computer doesnt make this noise when its booting (before windows loads) or in the bios.

Its really annoying. Im wondering if i need a new power supply. 750w should be good enough.

What kind of power supply should I have? I want to add another 470 since they are pretty cheap these days. I need some advice on this one.

I would say probably 1000w to be safe, but Kayne or Ketrebu would probably be able to give a better estimate.

Only thing I will add is make sure you have proper cooling man.

Two 470's and everything else will make your case HAWT!

I'm running 1000w but I only have one 470.

750W is enough if you don't have lots of peripherals and mild OC.
850W would be great.

Corsair HX850 ?

What Jong said. Corsair 750 or 850, go higher of course if you're gonna SLI 470s. Also, it was previously thought that having multiple 12v rails was a good idea, but now it's been shown that one huge ass 12v rail is more stable. It's possible that your power supply has multiple 12v rails and that's causing stress/noise when your CPU is under load, but I'm just guessing at that.

Its funny I have an Ultra 750w I paid good money for about 3 years ago, but this power supply is making a hissing kind squelch. Almost like an old CRT monitor would. So maybe the power supply is just old.

Also, I've now learnt that a really nice monitor makes all the difference. Im still using my old spare 17" crt screen and this computer still feels 100 years old.

Yeah that could be the situation im in.

Any suggestions on brand? I dont really want to spend more than 200 and I dont want to order online. Im tired of waiting lol.

As always, I have listen to Jong.

Corsair HX850 is what I purchased. I also found it in stock and at a good price, so I didnt have to order online.

So now my computer is pretty kick ass. Now I just need to get a second GTX470 and that will the the icing on the cake.

I just picked up my second 470. I found the CPU fan I want, but I cant get it until later this week.

Im not installing my second video card until I go to court on Friday. I'll be making a new thread about that story later.
