Old reddit thread:
http://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/commen ... ptolocker/

TLDR: Ransomware is malware that holds your computer hostage. It generally locks up your computer (generally loads pre-OS boot) and demands payment before sending you the unlock password. Generally, ransomware preys on social engineering to goad you into paying the ransom demand (they try to appear "legit" to raise chance of being paid -- e.g you visit porn site, get 'local' law enforcement message saying you broke some indecency/porn law and need to pay a fine).

CryptoLocker is a strain of ransomware that takes it further by encrypting your data aaaaaand whatever data it can get its hands on via your network connection and file access privileges. No social engineering here, it's out in the clear blackmail through and through.

This is devastating to companies that have poor backup practices (no offline backup) and poor access and control architecture/process review

The more you know~! :D

Saw a thread on reddit where two people got infected with this at a company. Both people had mapped drives to the share point environment. The whole thing got encrypted. Stuff of nightmares.

I've had to fix both my Dad's and my Uncle's computers from this stuff. It's always such a pain in the ass, as the baddies always get more and more creative with how to stop you from removing them. One even removed file associations for .exe files, so I couldn't easily start > run stuff like msconfig. haha.

I really hate having to do that kind of stuff.

Does doing this actually make a living for people? Who actually thinks that the police could hack into your computer and force you to pay a fine haha. I always assumed it was just people who felt like being dicks.

There are a lot of people out there who just don't know better and these cyber criminals prey on people's ignorance, fears and computer illiteracy ( hence why in my other post to you, I mentioned your best defense is being informed :D ).

There are ransomware out there that outright essentially tells you 'we have your computer lock, give us money to unlock it - kekekekekeke'

Sort of an aside, if you have time, watch this talk from a previous DefCon -- nice insight and funny personal anecdote
