Windows 9 10 to be FREE to owners of Windows 8

It's been quietly rumoured for some time, but a guy at Microsoft actually said it out loud. Windows 9 10 is to be free for anybody with Windows 8 or 8.1.

http://www.lifehacker.co.uk/2014/09/29/ ... -will-free

Quote:
Andreas Diantoro, the president of Microsoft Indonesia, confirms that Windows 9 will be a free upgrade for all Windows 8 users.

Some said that Windows 8 will get Windows 9 free of charge, while others claimed the company is also considering some sort of special offers for existing Windows XP users. A report from Indonesian online publication Detik said earlier this week that President of Microsoft Indonesia Andreas Diantoro has confirmed this particular Windows 9 feature.

According to Diantoro, the Windows 9 upgrade will be available free of charge to all existing Windows 8 users once it’s released.

This has obviously leaked out in advance, there was supposed to be a Microsoft media event for Windows 9 tomorrow.

I'm pretty certain Windows 9 is actually just Windows 8.2, though, but they're obviously hoping to get rid of a bit of the Windows 8 stigma by rebranding it. Though hey, it worked for Windows 7, which is just Windows Vista with all it's service packs and a new taskbar.

Dat combined customizable Windows 9 start menu though:

EDIT: Apparently Microsoft cannot count. It's now Windows 10.

When is this coming out, anyway?

I have been holding off on a new laptop until windows 9 came out. But if this is the case, I may get one earlier. My old laptop is a bit long in the tooth and not as awesome for playing games on when either Fado or I are stuck using it. haha.

I think it comes out March or April of next year, they haven't officially announced it (that I know of) it's just an assumption.

I feel like my PC is kinda dated since I built it like 3 years ago...but it still runs everything great. I feel wasteful upgrading anything serious like GPU or CPU without having a reason since it's so $$. I wonder how smoothly Windows 9 will run on older hardware.

Ah, okay.

i don't really need a new laptop. I'm still rocking this old Asus G73jh that I got back when FF14 1.0 came out. So it's definitely old, but not dead in the water. Just a matter if I want to drop money on a new laptop, or if I want to be good instead.

I know them feels; I built my desktop in Nov 2011. I'm hoping to get more mileage out of it especially since I built a desktop replacement laptop in the spring for $1700 :x

Maybe the changes warrant a version jump. Guess we'll see.

Its because when it comes to windows I'm pretty sure its generally a case that odd numbers are more stable / successful. So they had to go with an even number this time round.

Someone posted on neogaf this link. I don't know much about coding but it seems like a legit concern which is why the OS skipped the 9 title.
