This is just my humble opinion, but from what i've noticed playing since Alpha it really looks like they are giving you raw jobs you can play, but the idea is to mix and match abilities from other jobs to create your own "class".
As an example started with Maruader, great mele DPS and decent defense. The ability to restore HP with damage, then added some debuff abilities like 'Slow' and 'Poison" from Thaumaturge and it was actually quite fun. Although the cool downs were longer on the debuffs, the accuracy of the spells was still very decent and worthwhile.
As far as your affinity goes, "Second Wind" seems to be affected by VIT. So regardless of job (Pugalist still having the most benefit from it) The amount of HP it restores is also related to your total VIT.
