I received a notification early this morning that Nintendo is ending SwapNote service effective immediately. They will also no longer send official messages to users via Swapnote spotpass. (Boo, I liked collecting the stationary). I'm assuming, but I haven't tried it, that the app can still be used locally, just not via the internet.
The notice explains that they were unhappy with users exchanging friend codes on internet forums. It also explained that minors could send or receive obscene photo attachments as the reason for the removal of service. It went on to say that service will not recommence.
Personally I'm really disappointed. I enjoyed sending people stupid doodles. In the US, street pass is basically useless. None of my friends live anywhere remotely near me anymore. I can't help but feel simply disabling the photo attachment feature of swapnote would have been sufficient, but I guess they're trying to cover as much of their butts up so not to be associated with child porn or any media sensation around it.
It was fun while it lasted SwapNote. May ye rest in peace.
